Story-telling, memory making and reminiscence are all things we participate in on a daily basis. Whether it is a resident enjoying music from their early adulthood, or a staff member telling you about their drive to work, we all experience this. Guided reminiscence programs have the ability to be powerful and meaningful to those involved and can turn something we do everyday into a therapeutic approach. This module takes a look at narrative therapy and reminiscence and how to create a meaningful reminiscence program for older adults and specifically people living with dementia. Students will be taken through designing, creating and implementing a reminiscence program from start to finish. We will look at environmental, social and emotional aspects that can make for a very meaningful program that can help the resident themselves, but also influence care in a positive way!
This module is designed to enable you to engage the dementia person/s in conversation related to the person’s past. Upon completion of this module, students will be equipped with the skills to plan and implement a successful Reminiscence program with their clients/residents, while understanding the meaning behind using Reminiscence as a therapeutic tool. Learners will be able to distinguish the difference between simply speaking to a resident about their past versus taking a truly therapeutic approach. This course will help you engage the person with dementia in conversations about their past through the use of their five senses, sight, touch, smell, taste and sound.
Format and Procedures
This two hour course will be delivered online via meeting platform Zoom. Upon registering for the course, students will be sent a link to the platform for the date and time of which the class will take place. If necessary, students are encouraged to contact the instructor for a step by step information session on how to use the platform in preparation for module. On the day of the course, students are encouraged to join the platform a few minutes early in case they are in need of technical assistance. The class will be two hours long, with a fifteen minute break mid way through the lesson. There will be time at the end of the session for questions and discussion.
